This year, our plane home landed in Philly late on the 23rd. So instead of heading straight to the train up to my (Brad’s) parent’s place, we coordinated a hang with some old college friends, including Liz Brown, Dave Burris our professor Dr. Jim McGahey.

LL had met Dave previously on one of his work trips out to the west coast.

It had been more than a decade since I’d seen Doc!

We mosey’d our way down to Pat’s Cheesesteaks in South Philly. Glorious.

Liz joined us on the regional train out of Philly, but not before a Philadelphia subway ride!

Great fun, friends and food. Love visiting Philly!

After hearing the insane airport stories of friends all over the country we braved the 405, LAX and airport security last Friday. Surprisingly smooth trips all the way up to our plane. Of course, we had to stop at Wolf Gangs for lunch and holiday videos and messages. Here’s a pic we took for a buddy!

After meeting a guy named Marc who practices yoga at our same yoga studio we all got on board our flight to Philly!

We settled in for our flight, excited for what was awaiting us in PA. No, not the cold weather! But, 13th Street….

We spent time with friends (see Brads blog) and slept under Christmas lights (cover pic) before taking the train to the Crowell annual Christmas trifecta!

With the musicians playing holiday cheer I captured as many songs on video as Roberts camera would muster. The quote of the night goes to Peter (cousin Hannah’s fiancée from the U.K.) “Brad, how long have you been playing the trumpet?” Background: Brad plays the trombone.

We all got dressed up! Even Grandpa Crowell put on a piece of Hespera for the holiday occasion. We exchanged gifts from Pollyanna. She did pretty great this year!

Then it was off to bed to gear up for day 2!

Snoopy loves his gift!!!

Then it was time for the rest of the family to come over.

Me and G-MA H

After fun times and Christmas dinner it was time to curl up, watch a movie and hang out with the fam some more.

We awoke Monday morning and enjoyed a slow day off before the annual Koffel Clan holiday party! The families that grew up together on this road many years ago gather around the day after Christmas to catch up and meet the new editions (babies, finances, etc.)

We are currently in route to NYC! Stay tuned for more deets on our time in Philly from Brad

While this was not the first year forgot I had to make the trip with LL and I up north for Thanksgiving, it was Bayon’s first long-distance drive. I’m sure he had no idea of what was happening as we crammed before of us into the car, but he handled the confinement well.

Gaia (6 years) had previously met Lambeau (4 years), but Luna (5 months) and Bayon (10 months) are both new additions to the family.

Below, Luna greets LL.

Then, of course, the two puppies had a chance to meet 🙂

Lambeau decided that he end Bayon were going to be friends.

The pic at the very top is what I referred to as the “calendar shot” but below is the aftermath…

We hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving with you and yours!

My (LL) father and I have been doing Turkey Trots off and on since I was in high school. Missing only a few years in college and 2013 due to breaking my leg. Last year Brad joined in on the family tradition. He skipped across that finish line!

This year we woke up and prepared our Bulletproof coffee to warm our blood before bracing the fog and sub 40 degree weather. My sister Lacey, brother Michael and father Mike joined us before the start line.

The 5 of us began discussing race times, who would be running, walking and at what time/mile when Brad asks me what my race pace was. I said I should be about 25 min. He confidently says he’ll be running with me!

What?!?!

My husband run? Brad run and run a 5k in 25 min?!

To give you some background I run a 5k a few days a week. Brad has run a 5k…I’m not sure since his soccer days if he’s ran more than a mile ever. He hikes miles on weekends but running…not so much.

But wow! He killed it! He kept up with me for the first half and then completed the race in 28 min.

I came in second in my age group and 25th female overall! Pilates is my not so secret weapon.

Next year I bet Brad beats his own time! Maybe even me!!

Wow, wow, wow — it’s been a year already! LL and I can’t even believe it. This year has been jam packed with the most amazing changes for both of us as individuals, and for our family unit.

We’re incredibly grateful for job changes – both of us changed positions within our companies, and I launched a company with a close friend of mine.

We added a new family member to the fold, which you couldn’t have missed if you’ve seen any of our Facebook or Instagram posts. Bayon, adopted at three months, is now at least 45 lbs!

Bayon

Together, LL and I launched a podcast. If you’re waiting on the edge of your seats for the final episode, we blame the dogs for knocking my hard drive off the table… stay tuned, it’s coming.

Our wedding photos were published on A Practical Wedding’s website. And starting today, we’ll be posting them to social media. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have!

In celebration of our anniversary, we took 36 hour off from life as we know it, plotting a staycation and telling nobody 😎

Last night we had a masseus come to our apartment. That was magical. Gaia was VERY uncomfortable with the concept and Bayon could have cared less.

This morning, we got up early and drove to our yoga teacher’s home studio for a couples private session. We learned that I need to work on passive backbends and LL needs to reach more through her left side body to eliminate torque. It’s possible that that’s TMI… but not really.

After that we scooped up the dogs and went down to Marina del Rey for our weekly puppy training class. I stayed with Bayon and LL went to a cafe with Gaia.

Then we walked around the canals in Venice. It was super hot, but quite lovely.

Back at the house, we took a quick nap, and then back down to Venice beach for some Bulletproof Coffee – sans the dogs this time – before enjoying sunset in the Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica.

What an incredible evening we experienced last night! After a relatively quick 4 hour drive. to Las Vegas from LA, we met up with Graham and his wife Nicole for our weekend vacation in the city of sin. First on the agenda? Find Graham and his new house 🙂

Next up was to head over to the Wynn Hotel and resort and find the restaurant called La Cave, just before snagging our tickets in time for showstoppers, where Nicole is one of the leads in the show!

This guy to my left decided to pay for a very expensive nap… he was asleep before the show even started 🙂

This show is very rare, as it has a full 30 person orchestra on stage playing all of the music live. That doesn’t happen much anymore on these type of shows. Nicole, is featured on the left side.

The costumes and line dancing were amazing. The tunes? Historic. The talent? Unbelievable!

There were many different sets, and they played about 12 tunes.

Below is Nicole killing it in the Grease number.

Tonight, Jersey Boys to see Graham rocking the stage!

If you have been following along with our Podcast then you know that I (LL) love my birthday, and well, birthdays in general. So, as Brad’s was fast approaching and during the busiest summer we have had yet (yes, even busier than last summer when we planned a wedding in 4 months and had 3 engagement parties, plus Brad’s bday.)

I wanted to surprise him on a date night. As you also know, Brad loves Korean BBQ! The past 2 years we have celebrated his birthday at OO-Kook in K-town. This year I wanted to surprise him and the two of us go to a new Korean BBQ. So, I looked up the top Korean BBQ restaurants in LA and then picked one close to us. My theory was to help find another incredibly awesome Korean BBQ close by so we didn’t have to drive to K-town whenever we wanted all-you-can-eat.

Brad's Bday Bash Korean BBQ at Hanjip in Culver City
Korean BBQ at Hanjip in Culver City

I found this awesome list. The top 15 LA Korean BBQ’s. Oo Kook was #12 and #5 was a new restaurant and in Culver City, just a couple miles away and right near Brad’s work. I texted Brad, “Have you had Korean BBQ in Culver City?” His response was, “No.”

IMG_1719Fantastic! I get to surprise him with a top rated restaurant and if he likes it, he can go during lunch or we can meet up afterwork. I was stoked! PS, it’s extremely hard for me to keep a secret, so for the next week not telling him where we were going was killing me!

The night of his birthday we met up at the house, changed out of our work clothes and hopped in the jeep to go to his surprise bday dinner. As we pulled up to look for parking, Brad sees the place, Hanjip. If I haven’t set this up enough for you to guess, then here’s your spoiler alert: Brad has been there before! Yep, totally went there for lunch with his friend Kyle Peters and loved it. Soooo, wanh, wanh… the wind in my awesome-wife-planning-sails was sucked out.
IMG_1717
However, since he did love it, we still enjoyed a great date!
IMG_1726
Then it was time for Brad’s birthday extravaganza! Here’s Brad to tell you all about his tour through little Tokyo Osaka (Japantown on Sawtelle.)

Brad here!
IMG_7497-Edit-1080x675
First stop for my birthday extravaganza was dinner two nights later at Manpuku, a Japanese BBQ place quite close to our place in Westwood. Wonder no more – BBQ is clearly my favorite 😀 This, however, is Japanese, not Korean BBQ. It’s different in the way the meat is marinated, and the dishes that accompany the meat. Also, instead of soju and beer, it’s generally sake and beer. It was a bit more complicated at this place, because they don’t offer all-you-can-eat, but it was great to be back at this restaurant after so many years. Our party was made up of 10, and we feasted!

After Manpuku, a bunch of us skipped down to Liquid Kitty on Pico Blvd to hang for their infamous martinis and a great vibe. Some great laughs and even more fun times with friends.

The last three standing, DJ (the Boxing Chef), his old roommate and fellow Philadelphian, Jeremy, and myself ventured over to Pho Shop on Westwood Blvd. Pretty sure we were there until about 3am 🙂 Great food, and then back home it was 😀

Hello, This past weekend LL’s Mom came to visit! Like any trip to LA it was filled with adventure. So, we decided to let her share her story with all of you! Here she is:

Mama Lisa was finally able to get on the Crows calendar! Counting down the days to the big weekend in mid-July, started back in March, so the anticipation was huge and everyone in Central California was counting down the days with me. Lesley and I had been working on the itinerary, which included several yoga classes, a day at the spa, several trips to Whole Foods, a quaint dinner party with friends, an evening at Cinespia to watch my favorite movie, “Kill Bill,” fur-baby fun and puppy training, a behind the scenes view of “As the Crows Fly” podcast recording, a walk about the Melrose Trading Post, a hair stylist makeover and lots and lots of picture taking and bragging to everyone who would listen to this proud mama talk about Brad and Lesley!
It all started with what should have been a quick flight from Northern California to LAX with a reserved shuttle to the Crows nest, but turned into a 2:00 a.m. sneaking into their place without waking the dogs and the realization that overcoming my fear of travel and driving myself would have been easier and faster! Viola’ my fear of travel is officially cured…because, who wants to go through that again?!?! Finally, arrived and Brad met me out in the courtyard of their building and slipped me in past the dogs, so whew…that entrance was quietly successful, even if it was three hours later than expected.

The first morning yoga class was amazing! I wish I had a recording of everything the teacher said throughout the class, because so much of it dealt with self-talk and how to be gentle with yourself when you catch yourself not meeting your own expectations. For example, one of the scenarios the teacher mentioned was, “When you catch yourself, not doing something or cheating on a yoga pose or fill in the blank____, she said, treat yourself like you would if you caught a child with his or her hands in the cookie jar! You would gently redirect the child to the goals or expectations.” That was just one of many life coaching lessons in that yoga class. If you’re in the LA area check out Heather Dawn at bodymuse.com

Later that night, Brad and Lesley had a quaint dinner party, so I enjoyed meeting some of their friends! I met Eric Ruyak who designed the famous ring shown in the Game of Thrones! I met Marina Bonani, a google music lawyer! I met Michael Myers (a trainer, pilates student) and Michael’s beautiful friend Liz, and DJ (the boxing chef from their podcast)! It’s so true, you can tell a lot about people by the friends they hang out with, so it’s not surprising that their friends are as amazing as the Crows, because, birds of a feather flock together!

Saturday morning was spent taking a yoga class with Lesley in West Hollywood with instructor Anthony Benenati. Anthony made some interesting points about War and Peace, which I am still pondering, but somehow he managed to help put the current news into perspective, if that’s possible. Basically, and I am paraphrasing…he said, “You can’t enjoy peace without war, if you take away war, you have to take away peace…nothing exists without its opposite existing.” From that class we enjoyed a healthy breakfast and ubered over to Olympic Spa. There was a hot mugworts tea pool, followed by a freezing, ice cold pool, and back to the hot pool, then several layers of skin was scrubbed off from head to toe. I have to admit, that was a little more painful than I anticipated. There was also a facial, more skin scrubbing, hair washing and more skin scrubbing, a massage, and more skin scrubbing! Needless to say, the oils and moisturizers felt very soothing and refreshing! I went into the spa with a nice spay-on tan, and left with tan scrubbed off, but my skin was as soft as a babies bottom and felt AMAZINGLY INVIGORATED!!

After the spa, Brad met us at Gracias Madre for a delicious lunch. We came back to their place to record their podcast, while I listened for awhile. I found it very interesting to be “behind the scenes recording.” However, I was so relaxed from the spa that I fell asleep while they were recording. This would not have been so bad, except for anyone who knows me, knows that I usually wear a sleeping mask due to snoring and sleep apnea…well, I didn’t plan to fall asleep, so I was not wearing my mask and I began S-n-O-r-i-N-g, while they were recording. I woke up to the two of them laughing and found myself begging them to please edit the snoring out of their podcast…UGH!!!!
Later that night, we headed out to Cinespia to watch one of my favorite movies, “Kill Bill!” That was so fun to be out with thousands of people at a cemetery, while the movie was shown outside on a building wall! It was great seeing people dressed up like the characters in the movie. We ate dinner there, picnic style, and took pictures!

As The Crows Fly - Mama Lisa Cinespia Kill Bill

Sunday, I took another yoga class and tried to apply the “self-talk” lesson, but let’s just say, “my hand was in the cookie jar a lot,” and it was just a harder class to get through. Fortunately, the Equinox gym is very luxurious and there are so many amenities there that I forgot about my struggles and felt like a super star by the time I finished showering and getting ready to meet up with Lesley and Brad.

After the yoga class, we took the dogs for an outing to the Melrose Trading Post, where the dogs were met with Paparazzi! Everywhere we went, people would stop us to pet the dogs! They were so darn cute and made us all proud by sitting and letting everyone make over them. We even took them to lunch with us, where they were the center of attention by those who passed by or were eating at the restaurant with us! Of course, I took every opportunity to brag about The Crows and As the Crows Fly! One person said I should get hired and paid to be their PR Person!

Then on Monday I took an uber to another incredible Yoga class, breakfast in West Hollywood before meeting a new hairdresser for a very LA makeover. I’ll let you be the judge but I’m loving my new hair enough to drive down to LA every couple of months just to get my hair done. Such a fantastic trip. Cannot wait to return.

As we were flying back from our honeymoon we found out about our Yoga instructor Anthony Benenati’s retreat in Ojai, Ca., just a 90 min drive from LA. Of course we were in! We snagged two spots in a Yurt and then waited for the end of June to arrive.

On our way up we enjoyed Waze’s creative instructions through back roads for half the drive while catching up on our favorite podcast, Undisclosed. Then we took a rest stop at Noso Vita for egg sandwiches, Kombucha and Bulletproof coffee.

After our evening yoga class and an incredible home cooked farm to table dinner from chef Evan we all sat around a fire. We each wrote down something we were ready to transform.

The next morning after a 2 hour yoga class Brad went to check out the tree that fell over during the night. Yes, this tree fell over while we slept. It narrowly missed a car.

The retreat was held at the Calliote Canyon and we both loved this space. After enjoying our brunch we took off into town for a snack, some antique shopping and stumbled upon a massive lavender festival.

Then it was back to our retreat for another yoga class before dinner. It was on this night we found out that someone had ranked yoga poses in a book from zero-60. Brad did a pose that was ranked in the 50’s! We didn’t snap a photo of that unfortunately.

The next day we awoke and went straight to yoga. The past two days we went to two classes. So, on this day we were “feeling it” (We don’t do this many yoga classes, usually!) But that didn’t hold us back.

Instead we both ended up doing poses we had not yet experienced. I (LL) did the “60” pose I heard about the night before. Standing tall, bending backward and grabbed my ankles without touching the floor. While Brad walked in circles on his head. Below is another rockstar series Brad did.

.

.

After class we enjoyed an incredible brunch and drove home to Gaia and Bayon!

It’s safe to say we loved this retreat, and retreating will be in our future. Our next one, I’ll be leading! Yes, Cambodia and Pilates in March. Seriously looking forward to going back to that magical place. Want to join us?
